Bhubaneswar: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has announced that Odisha will likely face heavy rainfall over the next week due to the formation of a low-pressure area.
An upper-air cyclonic circulation originating from northern Thailand is anticipated to develop over the north Andaman Sea by the evening of September 18. This system is expected to evolve into a low-pressure area around the evening of September 19.
As it strengthens, the system is predicted to gradually move west-northwest towards the southern coast of Odisha and northern Andhra Pradesh within the next few days. The weather agency is currently monitoring the situation and will provide updates regarding any changes to its intensity or path, as confirmed by IMD Director General Dr. Mrutyunjay Mohapatra.
While there is no cyclone forecast at this time, the low-pressure system is expected to bring heavy to very heavy rainfall across the state. The IMD has issued both orange and yellow weather warnings for various districts, valid until the morning of September 24.
The IMD’s latest weather bulletin indicates an orange warning for thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds in the districts of Baleshwar, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Jagatsinghapur, Kataka, Sundaragada, Jharsuguda, Baragada, Sambalpur, Debagada, Anugola, Dhenkanal, Kendujhar, and Mayurbhanj over the next 24 hours.
Additionally, a yellow warning for heavy rainfall has been issued for Baleshwar, Kendujhar, and Mayurbhanj during this period.
Thunderstorms, along with lightning and gusty winds, are likely to occur in parts of Subarnapur, Boudh, Nuapada, Balangir, Kalahandi, Kandhamala, Nabarangpur, Rayagada, Koraput, Malkangiri, Gajapati, Ganjam, Puri, Khordha, and Nayagada.
On September 18-19, yellow warnings for heavy rain have been issued for Sundaragada, Kendujhar, and Mayurbhanj.
Thunderstorm activity, featuring lightning and gusty winds, is predicted for Baleshwar, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Jagatsinghapur, Kataka, Sundaragada, Kendujhar, Mayurbhanj, Gajapati, Ganjam, Puri, Khordha, and Nayagada.
From September 19-20, thunderstorms may again affect Baleshwar, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Jagatsinghapur, Kataka, Sundaragada, Kendujhar, Mayurbhanj, Gajapati, Ganjam, Puri, Khordha, and Nayagada.
Thunderstorm conditions are expected to persist across numerous regions of the state until September 22.
On September 23-24, heavy rain is forecasted for districts including Baleshwar, Mayurbhanj, Rayagada, Koraput, Malkangiri, Gajapati, and Ganjam.
