Bhubaneswar: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted a week filled with widespread light to moderate rainfall throughout Odisha, along with a Yellow Warning for thunderstorms, lightning, and strong winds in various districts. This alert, which originates from the Meteorological Centre in Bhubaneswar, is effective starting today, July 11, and will last until July 16.
As of the latest report at 2:00 PM, the Monsoon trough is actively influencing the weather, running from Sri Ganganagar to Rohtak, Shahjahanpur, Basti, Muzaffarpur, and extending further east-southeast towards Manipur. This meteorological setup is responsible for the current weather conditions across the state.
In the next 24 hours (valid until 08:30 IST on July 12), the IMD has cautioned about thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds reaching speeds of 30-40 km/h. These conditions are likely to affect one or two areas within the districts of Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Jagatsinghapur, Cuttack, Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Bargarh, Sambalpur, Deogarh, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Gajapati, Ganjam, Puri, Khurda, and Nayagarh.
Moreover, a Heavy Rainfall warning has been issued for potential heavy rain in selected areas of Sundargarh, Keonjhar, and Mayurbhanj during the same timeframe.
The Yellow Warning will persist throughout the week. For Days 2 (July 12-13) and 3 (July 13-14), similar warnings for thunderstorms will apply to a wide range of districts, including both coastal and northern areas.
On Days 5 (July 15-16), the warning for thunderstorms will be concentrated on Balasore, Keonjhar, and Mayurbhanj, where heavy rainfall is also anticipated. No alerts are issued for Days 6 and 7 (July 16-18), but rain is expected to continue across many locations.
As per the observations recorded at 8:30 AM today, light to moderate rainfall was noted in several parts of Odisha, with heavy downpours in Khurda and Nayagarh. The highest rainfall in a 24-hour period was observed at Balipatna in Khurda district with 9 cm, followed by Nayagarh district with 7 cm, and Bissem-Cuttack in Rayagada district with 6 cm.
The highest temperature recorded in the plains of Odisha was 35.0°C in Nuapada, while the lowest was 20.0°C in Boudh.
In Bhubaneswar and surrounding areas, the IMD forecasts a generally overcast sky with chances of rain or thunderstorms. Expected temperatures are around 35°C for the maximum and 27°C for the minimum. Bhubaneswar has reported a maximum temperature of 34.2°C and a minimum of 23.4°C as of this morning, along with 1.7 mm of rainfall.
A Farmers Weather Bulletin has advised farmers to exercise caution over the next 24 hours due to the risk of thunderstorms and heavy rain.
Fishermen along the Odisha coast have also been warned to stay vigilant, as weather alerts are in effect for the next five days (July 11-15).
