Bhubaneswar: As of 8:30 AM on August 9, 2026, the Low Pressure Area that was located over northern Odisha and adjacent Jharkhand has shifted towards northeast Madhya Pradesh and neighboring Chhattisgarh, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
The associated cyclonic circulation reaches up to 7.6 kilometers above the mean sea level and is currently tilting southwestward, as reported by the IMD.
Forecasts for today indicate a high probability of heavy rainfall in select areas, particularly in the districts of Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Bargarh, Kendujhar, Mayurbhanj, Nuapada, Balangir, Kalahandi, Nabarangpur, Koraput, and Malkangiri.
Additionally, thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and strong winds, with speeds between 30 to 40 km/h, are expected in parts of Baleshwar, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Jagatsinghpur, Cuttack, Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Bargarh, Sambalpur, Deogarh, Anugul, Dhenkanal, Kendujhar, Mayurbhanj, Nuapada, Balangir, Kalahandi, Nabarangpur, Koraput, and Malkangiri.
A yellow warning has been issued for August 10, urging residents to remain vigilant, as heavy rainfall is anticipated in areas including Baleshwar, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Jagatsinghpur, Cuttack, Kendujhar, Mayurbhanj, Nabarangpur, and Koraput.
Thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds of 30 to 40 km/h are likely to affect Baleshwar, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Jagatsinghpur, Cuttack, Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Bargarh, Sambalpur, Deogarh, Anugul, Dhenkanal, Kendujhar, Mayurbhanj, Kalahandi, Nabarangpur, Rayagada, Koraput, Malkangiri, and Gajapati.
The yellow warning will remain in effect on August 11, with heavy rain expected in Kendujhar and Mayurbhanj. Thunderstorms and strong winds are again anticipated in Baleshwar, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Jagatsinghpur, Cuttack, Sundargarh, Kendujhar, Mayurbhanj, Gajapati, Ganjam, Puri, Khordha, and Nayagarh.
On August 12, light to moderate rain or thundershowers are likely across various districts in Odisha, with a yellow alert issued for heavy rainfall in Baleshwar, Sundargarh, Kendujhar, and Mayurbhanj.
Residents in the affected regions have been advised to stay alert and follow updates from the IMD.
