Bhubaneswar: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) announced on Friday that heavy rainfall is expected in numerous areas of Odisha over the next three days as a result of a low-pressure system positioned over the Bay of Bengal.
According to Manorama Mohanty, Director of the IMD Bhubaneswar Centre, this weather system, located over Gangetic West Bengal and bordering Jharkhand and northern Odisha, is anticipated to gradually weaken within the next 24 hours.
A ‘yellow alert’ indicating potential heavy rainfall has been issued for several regions including Sundargarh, Baragarh, Kendujhar, Mayurbhanj, Nuapada, and Balangir for Saturday, Mohanty stated.
Additionally, heavy rains are forecasted for one or two locations in the Keonjhar and Mayurbhanj districts on Sunday, and for Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Kendujhar, and Mayurbhanj on Monday.
Light to moderate rainfall is also expected in various other regions of the state until July 22, she noted.
On Friday, the highest recorded rainfall was 34.2 mm in Baripada, Mayurbhanj district, followed by Balangir with 15 mm, as reported by the IMD in its bulletin.
Other rainfall figures included Malkangiri at 14.2 mm, Jharsuguda at 11.6 mm, Nuapada and Sonpur at 8 mm, and Daringibadi in Kandhamal district at 5 mm.
Since the beginning of the current monsoon season, Odisha has received an average of 446.9 mm of rainfall, which is 17 percent above the normal level of 382.8 mm, according to another official.
