Bhubaneswar: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) announced on Friday that heavy rainfall is anticipated in multiple regions of Odisha for the next three days, driven by a low-pressure system located over the Bay of Bengal.
According to Manorama Mohanty, Director of the IMD’s Bhubaneswar Centre, the weather system, which was positioned over Gangetic West Bengal and parts of Jharkhand and northern Odisha as of Friday, is expected to gradually weaken within the next 24 hours.
A ‘yellow alert’ indicating potential heavy rainfall has been issued for several areas, including Sundargarh, Baragarh, Kendujhar, Mayurbhanj, Nuapada, and Balangir for Saturday. Mohanty further noted that heavy rain is also anticipated in one or two locations in Kendujhar and Mayurbhanj on Sunday, and in Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Kendujhar, and Mayurbhanj on Monday.
Light to moderate rainfall is predicted for various other areas across the state until July 22, she added. On Friday, Baripada in Mayurbhanj district recorded the highest rainfall at 34.2 mm, followed by Balangir with 15 mm, according to the IMD’s bulletin.
Other rainfall figures included 14.2 mm in Malkangiri, 11.6 mm in Jharsuguda, 8 mm each in Nuapada and Sonpur, and 5 mm in Daringibadi located in Kandhamal district. This monsoon season, Odisha has witnessed an average rainfall of 446.9 mm, which is 17 percent above the normal average of 382.8 mm.
