On Monday, Odisha faced heavy downpours influenced by a low-pressure system, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) reporting over 100 mm of rainfall in eight locations during the 24-hour period ending at 8:30 am.
The most substantial rainfall of 169.4 mm was noted at Joda in Keonjhar district, followed closely by Papadahandi in Nabarangpur at 158.8 mm, and Paikmal in Bargarh with 120 mm. Other areas exceeding 100 mm included Kusumi and Jashipur in Mayurbhanj, Jharigaon in Nabarangpur, as well as Telkoi and Champua in Keonjhar.
The IMD indicated that the low-pressure area was situated over Gangetic West Bengal, with extensions into parts of Jharkhand and northern Odisha as of Monday morning. This system is projected to move northwestward across Jharkhand and northern Odisha over the next day.
On Monday, heavy rain is anticipated across 16 of Odisha’s 30 districts. An orange alert has been issued for Sundergarh, Jharsuguda, Bargarh, Sambalpur, Sonepur, and Boudh, while a yellow alert is in effect for ten other districts.
Thunderstorms, lightning, and strong winds are also expected in various regions of the state. These weather patterns are predicted to persist for the next six days.
In response to the severe weather, all schools and anganwadi centers in Nabarangpur district were closed, and 89 schools in Bhadrak also remained shut on Monday.
