Odisha Braces for Heavy Rain and Thunderstorms; IMD Issues Orange Warning

Bhubaneswar: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned that heavy to very heavy rain is expected to impact various regions of Odisha over the next week due to a low-pressure area situated over the Bay of Bengal, as announced on Saturday.

Thunderstorm activity is also anticipated in numerous districts throughout the coming days. The IMD has released orange and yellow warnings for different areas of the state, effective until the morning of August 15.

In its midday weather update, the IMD issued an orange warning for heavy to very heavy rain in specific locations within Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Bargarh, and Sambalpur districts over the next 24 hours.

Additionally, a yellow warning for heavy rainfall has been issued for Baleshwar, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Jagatsinghpur, Cuttack, Deogarh, Angul, Dhenkanal, Kendujhar, Mayurbhanj, Sonepur, Boudh, Koraput, Malkangiri, Gajapati, Ganjam, Nayagarh, Nuapada, and Balangir districts during this period.

Furthermore, thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and strong winds reaching speeds of 30-40 km/h may affect isolated areas across many districts, including coastal, northern, and southern regions of the state.

On August 9-10, a yellow warning for heavy rain is in effect for Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Bargarh, and Sambalpur districts.

Thunderstorms, along with lightning and gusty winds of 30-40 km/h, are predicted at one or two locations over Baleshwar, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Jagatsinghpur, Cuttack, Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Bargarh, Sambalpur, Kendujhar, Mayurbhanj, Gajapati, Ganjam, Puri, Khordha, and Nayagarh.

Similar weather patterns are expected to persist on August 11 and 12, with yellow warnings for heavy rainfall issued for Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Bargarh, and Sambalpur, along with thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds in these coastal and interior districts.

On August 13, the yellow warning for heavy rain will be restricted to Sundargarh and Kendujhar districts. Thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds of 30-40 km/h are forecast for isolated locations across Baleshwar, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Jagatsinghpur, Cuttack, Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Bargarh, Sambalpur, Kendujhar, Mayurbhanj, Gajapati, Ganjam, Puri, Khordha, and Nayagarh.

For August 14 and 15, a yellow warning for heavy rain has been issued for certain areas in Sundargarh and Kendujhar.
