The Regional Meteorological Centre in Bhubaneswar has issued a warning urging residents to take necessary precautions against lightning and local flooding.
District-Wise Rainfall Forecast
As per the forecast bulletin released on September 8, heavy rainfall is expected to impact several northern, northeastern, and southern districts:
- September 9: An Orange Warning has been issued for Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Debagarh, Kendujhar, Mayurbhanj, and Baleswar, predicting very heavy rainfall, along with lightning and strong winds gusting up to 40-50 km/h. Yellow warnings are also active for adjacent areas.
- September 10 (Wednesday): Continued heavy rain (7-11 cm) is forecasted for Mayurbhanj, Kendujhar, Baleshwar, and Bhadrak, with wind speeds between 30-40 km/h. Orange alerts remain in effect for Mayurbhanj and Kendujhar as rainfall intensity is expected to peak.
- September 11: Rainfall is anticipated to shift southwards. An Orange Alert has been issued for Koraput due to expected very heavy rains, while Yellow Warnings are in effect for central and southern districts, including Balangir, Kalahandi, Rayagada, Ganjam, Gajapati, and Malkangiri. Rainfall in northern areas is expected to diminish after this date.
- September 12 & Beyond: Isolated heavy showers are likely to continue in southern and central Odisha under a Yellow Warning. Weather conditions are projected to improve significantly after September 13, with no major alerts expected.
Weather System & Recent Statistics
In the past 24 hours, Odisha experienced an average rainfall of 4.3 mm, which is 45% below the expected daily average of 7.8 mm. However, localized heavy precipitation was noted in certain areas, particularly in Chandua, Mayurbhanj district, which recorded a peak of 155 mm of rainfall. Significant rain was also observed in parts of Nabarangpur, Gajapati, and Balasore.
Currently, there is no active low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal, but meteorologists anticipate the formation of a cyclonic circulation over the North Bay of Bengal or near the South Odisha-Andhra Pradesh coast between September 9 and 13, which could develop into a weak low-pressure area.
Safety Advisory Issued
The Meteorological Centre has recommended that the public remain indoors during thunderstorms and be cautious of waterlogging in low-lying regions. Fishermen are advised to avoid sea activities due to rough conditions and high winds.
