Five Arrested in Gujarat for Involvement in ₹26.2 Lakh Online Investment Scam

In Surat, the Cyber Crime Cell has detained five individuals belonging to an interstate cyber fraud ring, accused of swindling a local resident out of ₹26.20 lakh through a deceptive share market trading scheme. Investigators have traced this fraudulent activity to a bank account involved in 149 cyber crime complaints nationwide, with suspicious transactions exceeding ₹6.53 crore.

The fraudulent scheme initiated when the victim was added to a WhatsApp group where the suspects provided false share market trading advice, claiming high returns through their application. They then directed the victim to a fake trading website, urging the creation of an account.

Subsequently, the victim was convinced to transfer a total of ₹26.20 lakh into various bank accounts under the guise of share market investments. When the promised returns failed to materialize, the victim sought assistance by reporting the incident through the National Cyber Crime Helpline at 1930.

Following the report, the Cyber Crime Cell filed a First Information Report (FIR) under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, as well as Section 66(D) of the Information Technology Act, 2008.

Assistant Commissioner of Police (Cyber Crime) S.E. Daniels oversaw the investigation, while Police Inspector V.D. Mandora led the team that utilized technical analysis and financial tracing to identify the suspects through interstate collaboration.

The arrested individuals hail from Odisha and West Bengal and include Ranjan alias Sunil (33, Sundargarh, Odisha), Krishna Kumhar alias Kishan (54, Jharsuguda, Odisha), Subaschandra (52, Gajapati, Odisha), S.K. Alamgir (41, Purba Bardhaman, West Bengal), and Basantsingh alias Singhsar alias Big Boss (45, Murshidabad, West Bengal).
