Bhubaneswar: A low pressure area has emerged over the Northwest Bay of Bengal and the adjoining coastlines of Gangetic West Bengal and North Odisha, influenced by a cyclonic circulation located over South West Bengal and neighboring Bangladesh, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
The IMD indicated that this weather system is expected to strengthen further in the coming two days.
Weather scientist Uma Shankar Das shared on his X account: “As of 5:30 am today, an active cyclonic circulation has resulted in the formation of a low pressure area over the North-West Bay of Bengal near the West Bengal-Odisha coast. It is likely to intensify in the next two days.”
The IMD has issued an orange alert for very heavy rainfall today in four districts: Keonjhar, Angul, Dhenkanal, and Cuttack. Furthermore, a yellow alert for heavy rainfall has been released for 16 other districts, including Puri, Khordha, Nayagarh, Jagatsinghpur, Kendrapara, Jajpur, Bhadrak, Balasore, Mayurbhanj, Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Deogarh, Sambalpur, Bargarh, Sonepur, and Boudh. The weather service also predicts gusty winds reaching speeds of 30 to 40 km/h, coupled with rain in these areas.
Owing to anticipated rough sea conditions, fishermen are strongly advised against venturing into the sea until July 27.
The IMD has called on residents in the districts impacted by the weather system to stay vigilant, avoid areas prone to water accumulation, and take precautions against lightning and strong winds. Additionally, farmers and those living in low-lying regions are urged to remain cautious regarding potential water buildup.
