The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has announced a red alert for numerous districts in Odisha, predicting extremely heavy rainfall in the upcoming 48 hours as a low-pressure area is expected to form within the next day.
Manorama Mohanty, the Director of the Regional Meteorological Centre in Bhubaneswar, stated that the weather system is likely to bring widespread precipitation starting Tuesday night and lasting until Thursday morning. “We anticipate heavy to very heavy and, in certain areas, extremely heavy rainfall over the next two days,” she remarked during a press conference.
The districts under the red alert include Bhadrak, Kendrapara, and Jagatsinghpur. Additionally, an orange alert has been issued for Balasore, Jharsuguda, Cuttack, Puri, Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Ganjam, and Gajapati. Dhenkanal, Angul, Rayagada, Kandhamal, and Sundargarh are under a yellow alert for potential isolated heavy rainfall.
The IMD has advised fishermen against going into deep sea areas for the next five days due to dangerous conditions. The department also cautioned about the likelihood of waterlogging, flash floods, and interruptions to road and rail traffic in vulnerable regions.
According to the weather office, the rainfall is expected to persist beyond July 16, particularly affecting northern and coastal areas of Odisha.
