The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has pinpointed a slow-moving low-pressure system in the Bay of Bengal as the main factor behind the heavy rainfall and flooding currently affecting Odisha.
This system originated in the Northwest Bay of Bengal on July 25 and intensified into a depression and subsequently a deep depression by July 26. However, its movement has been remarkably slow, remaining near Jharsuguda after only traveling less than 500 kilometers in four days since its formation.
Experts believe this gradual movement has resulted in sustained heavy to very heavy rainfall, leading to flood conditions in multiple northern and central districts. Rivers such as the Baitarani and Salandi have surpassed danger levels, flooding low-lying regions, agricultural lands, and residential areas.
Districts like Bhadrak and Jajpur are experiencing significant waterlogging, road damage, and disruptions to daily life. As a precaution, many schools, colleges, and Anganwadi centers in affected areas have been closed.
Weather specialists caution that the system’s slow progression could prolong the rainfall, raising fears of worsening flood conditions. Relief teams and local authorities are on high alert as Odisha continues to endure the heavy rainfall.
