Bhubaneswar: Odisha may experience intense rainfall as an active low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal is expected to strengthen over the next two days.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted heavy to extremely heavy rain accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds across several districts until July 7. A red warning has been issued for Kalahandi, Rayagada, Koraput, Sambalpur, Sonpur, Anugola, Boudh, Kandhamala, and Malkangiri districts on June 3-4, while an orange warning has been issued for Nabarangpur, Nuapada, Balangir, Baragada, Ganjam, Gajapati, Kendujhar, Kataka, Dhenkanal, Nayagada, Sundargada, Mayurbhanj, and Kendujhar from June 3-7.
The weather agency has cautioned about potential traffic disruptions due to road flooding, waterlogging in low-lying areas and underpasses, particularly in urban regions. There may also be occasional visibility reductions due to heavy rainfall, minor damage to kutcha roads and vulnerable structures, along with landslides and mudslides. Damage to horticulture and standing crops is also likely in some areas due to inundation. The rainfall may lead to riverine flooding in certain river catchments.
Sea conditions are expected to be rough to very rough, with squally weather and wind speeds reaching 40-50 kmph, gusting to 60 kmph, prevailing along and off the Odisha coast during this period. Local Cautionary Signal No-III (LC-3) has been hoisted at Paradip and Dhamra ports.
