BHUBANESWAR: Despite the flood situation stabilizing in the state, a new wave of intense rainfall has led to increased water levels in both the Jalaka and Subarnarekha rivers, inundating parts of Mayurbhanj district once more.
According to official sources, the Jalaka and Subarnarekha rivers are currently flowing above the danger threshold. This flooding has impacted 84 villages across 18 blocks, as well as two wards in Baripada municipality. So far, 2,763 individuals have been affected, with 2,076 evacuated. Eleven relief camps are currently operational, providing assistance to 2,076 beneficiaries, as reported by officials.
Over the last 24 hours, the state has recorded an average rainfall of 8.9 mm, with Bangiriposi block experiencing the highest rainfall at 309.2 mm. The State Relief Commissioner’s office indicated that the situation of the rivers is being closely monitored, with necessary preparations in place by the relevant administrations.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has noted that a well-marked low-pressure area over Gangetic West Bengal and nearby regions of north coastal Odisha and the northwest Bay of Bengal continues to exist. This system is expected to move west-northwestward across north Odisha and Gangetic West Bengal within the next 24 hours. The IMD has forecasted heavy rainfall for several districts, including Bargarh, Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Sambalpur, Subarnapur, Nuapada, and Balangir, as a result of this weather pattern.
