Bhubaneswar: The Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) is planning to install more floating jetties near the Hirakud reservoir to boost rural access, in addition to the facilities previously proposed at three sites in western Odisha. The authority has requested the state government to pinpoint appropriate locations for these additional jetties. In response, the state has instructed collectors from Bargarh, Jharsuguda, and Sambalpur to explore their areas for potential sites.
These new floating jetties will be positioned beyond the already designated areas for jetty and terminal infrastructure. Last month, IWAI chairperson Sushil Kumar Lohani notified the state government that efforts were underway to develop onshore facilities, including terminals and floating jetties, at the locations identified by the state. However, there was a revision from the state government, with Kainsar Square in Sambalpur, Rampalunga in Jharsuguda, and another site in Bargarh district being recognized as the final locations pending further surveys.
Moreover, IWAI’s initiative includes providing floating jetties specifically aimed at improving rural connectivity around the Hirakud dam. For this project, the state government has asked the district administrations to identify suitable areas around the reservoir and submit their recommendations.
The government emphasizes that site selection should take into account local tourist traffic, connectivity from road to water, and the integration with ongoing island development initiatives.
Collectors have been tasked with forming dedicated district teams composed of revenue officials, district tourism officers, and technical staff from water resources and works departments to carry out physical surveys. This proposal is part of a larger strategy to develop the Hirakud reservoir for inland water transport, passenger movement, and tourism purposes. IWAI is currently preparing a detailed project report (DPR) to extend the Mahanadi waterway up to Naya Raipur, which encompasses the Hirakud reservoir, with completion expected by November this year.
Additionally, IWAI has informed the state government that the Hirakud reservoir is not included under the current support agreement between the authority and Odisha. An amended agreement to include the reservoir has been submitted for state approval.
