BHUBANESWAR: A low-pressure system has resulted in ongoing heavy rainfall across numerous districts in Odisha, causing flooding in low-lying regions and disrupting transportation on Thursday.
The state registered 36.1 mm of rainfall in the past 24 hours, which is 204 percent higher than the usual 11.8 mm. The Keonjhar district saw particularly severe rainfall, with Hatidihi recording an astonishing 210 mm. Additionally, nine areas experienced very heavy rainfall, and 48 locations reported heavy showers, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
Attabira noted 160.4 mm, while Burla received 145.1 mm, and both Hirakud and Padampur recorded 140 mm each. Other districts, including Balangir, Jharsuguda, and Boudh, also experienced over 100 mm of rain.
In Athagarh, floodwaters from the Sapua river affected low-lying neighborhoods, inundating villages and submerging parts of the old Cuttack-Sambalpur road, which halted vehicular traffic and disrupted daily life.
During the flooding, the Odisha Fire and Emergency Service managed to rescue seven individuals, including four women and a pet dog, from a waterlogged roadside dhaba near Sapua Bridge in Athagarh on Thursday night.
