Shefeen Ahamed K, a 2003-batch Indian Police Service officer of the Odisha cadre and the Inspector General of Police within the Crime Branch, passed away on Monday during cancer treatment at a private hospital in Thiruvananthapuram. He was 50 years old.
Hailing from Kerala and an engineering graduate from the College of Engineering Trivandrum (CET), Ahamed had been leading the Odisha CID Crime Branch since July 2023. He was the son of Habib, a former CITU leader. His untimely passing was described as a significant loss to the police community by colleagues and officials from both Odisha and Kerala.
Ahamed commenced his career as an Assistant Superintendent of Police upon joining the Indian Police Service. Over a span of more than twenty years, he held various critical positions in Odisha, including Superintendent of Police in Jharsuguda, DIG of the South Western Range, DIG Technical, IGP of Home Guards, IGP of the Human Rights Protection Cell, and DIG at Police Headquarters following his return from deputation. He also spent several years on inter-cadre deputation in Kerala, serving as Superintendent of Police (Rural) in Thiruvananthapuram.
He gained considerable acclaim for his contributions to the Cyber Crime division and the CID Crime Branch, receiving numerous awards and medals for his initiatives and campaigns in these areas. Colleagues recalled him as a dedicated professional known for his operational expertise and commitment to his duties.
Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi expressed his sorrow on social media, highlighting Ahamed’s invaluable service to the state and the Odisha Police, while extending condolences to his family, colleagues, and loved ones. Deputy Chief Minister Kanak Vardhan Singh Deo and senior officials, including the IGP of the Central Range, also paid their respects. The President of the Odisha IPS Association, Saumendra Priyadarshi, shared his condolences as well.
Ahamed’s death creates a void in the senior leadership of the Odisha Police, particularly in the areas of crime investigation and cybersecurity that he significantly influenced in recent years. Funeral arrangements and last rites details are pending from his family in Kerala.
