JHARSUGUDA: On Monday, law enforcement officials confiscated a large quantity of illegal codeine-based cough syrup and apprehended two interstate drug traffickers in the Badmal area.
The individuals taken into custody have been identified as Mohammad Ahsan Ahmed (38) from Darjibigha village in Aurangabad district, Bihar, and Rijwan Ansari (28) from Aliganj village in Bardhaman, West Bengal.
Based on credible intelligence, a special police unit executed an operation near a fly ash brick factory located at Tumbekela, where they intercepted a truck suspected of carrying the prohibited cough syrup.
According to Jharsuguda Superintendent of Police GR Raghavendra, at approximately 11 am, police stopped both a truck and a car in the vicinity of Tumbekela. The two individuals in the vehicles were detained, and upon inspection, officers discovered 197 sealed cartons containing a total of 23,640 bottles of codeine-infused cough syrup. This seizure amounted to 2,364 liters, classifying it as a commercial quantity under the NDPS Act.
In addition to the cough syrup, authorities seized the truck, the accompanying car, ₹2.44 lakh in cash, and two mobile phones.
