The Indian government has greenlit railway projects worth ₹20,804 crore, designed to boost operational effectiveness on essential freight and passenger corridors. These initiatives are expected to be finalized by the 2029-30 timeline and are in line with the PM Gati Shakti National Master Plan.
As per the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA), these projects will enhance connectivity for approximately 6,911 villages, benefiting nearly 1.08 crore residents.
Freight Activity
These developments are projected to support an increase in freight traffic by about 74 million tonnes annually.
Included in the projects are several key segments: the 77-km Arakkonam-Renigunta third and fourth lines, the 47-km Whitefield-Bangarapet third and fourth lines, the 147-km Hosur-Omalur doubling, the 159-km Salem-Karur-Dindigul doubling, and a 110-km fourth line connecting Secunderabad (Ghatkesar) to Kazipet.
The Arakkonam-Renigunta line, part of the high-density Mumbai-Chennai corridor, is currently operating at around 120 percent capacity. This upgrade is anticipated to yield an additional freight capacity of 7.21 million tonnes per year, resulting in an estimated annual savings of ₹110 crore in logistics.
Similarly, the Whitefield-Bangarapet segment, which is at 105 percent capacity, is poised for further saturation with the growth of nearby economic hubs. This project is expected to add 14.53 million tonnes of freight capacity annually and save approximately ₹137 crore in logistics costs each year.
The Hosur-Omalur doubling will likely provide an extra 8.95 million tonnes of freight traffic and save about ₹263 crore annually in logistics, while the Salem-Karur-Dindigul project is expected to generate 6.87 million tonnes of additional freight traffic and lead to savings of ₹219 crore each year.
The Secunderabad-Kazipet line is already functioning at 120 percent capacity and could reach up to 151 percent without the new project. The fourth line is projected to increase freight traffic by 9.83 million tonnes per annum, with expected annual logistics savings of ₹217 crore.
Moreover, the other three projects include a 367-km fourth line between Kharagpur and Jharsuguda (Bagdehi), a 201-km fourth line from Katni to Pendra Road, and an 87-km third line connecting Bilaspur (Uslapur) to Pendra Road.
