Odisha has significantly benefited from the Central Government’s Gati Shakti Multi-Modal Cargo Terminal (GCT) initiative, currently boasting 12 operational cargo terminals and receiving in-principle approval for an additional 36 across the state.
Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw shared this update with the Lok Sabha, also mentioning that a proposal for a new GCT in Porjanpur, located in the Keonjhar constituency, is under review.
The GCT policy aims to encourage private investment in rail freight, promoting faster, cost-efficient, and environmentally friendly cargo transportation.
Across India, there are currently 142 GCTs functioning, which are projected to manage 146 million tonnes of freight during the fiscal year 2025-26 while attracting nearly Rs 10,000 crore in private investments. Additionally, another 310 terminals have received preliminary approval.
Details of Odisha’s Operational Terminals
The 12 GCTs established in Odisha are situated at:
- Paradeep (three terminals), Jagatsinghpur
- Kechobahal-Laikera, Jharsuguda
- Jajpur Kendujhar Road, Jajpur
- Brajrajnagar, Jharsuguda
- Machapar, Kataka
- Barpali Road, Sundaragada
- Sogra, Sambalpur
- Brundamal, Jharsuguda
- Jakhpura, Jajpur
- Bondamunda Junction, Sundaragada
These terminals are anticipated to enhance cargo logistics for various sectors, including industry, ports, and mining areas within the state.
Enhancing Rail Logistics
The terminals are equipped with facilities such as warehouses, silos, and cold storage, which facilitate the efficient handling of goods including cement, steel, coal, fertilizers, food grains, automobiles, and agricultural products.
Officials have noted that this initiative is helping to lower logistics expenses, enhance wagon turnaround rates, and promote a transition from road transport to rail. Furthermore, it is expected to create job opportunities, boost industrial competitiveness, and contribute to regional economic development.
