In a significant move, Anil Agarwal, the Chairman of Vedanta, has expressed plans to invest as much as ₹80,000 crore in West Bengal, aiming to enhance energy production and aluminium manufacturing. This initiative is expected to create numerous job opportunities, with Asansol identified as a key location due to its rich resources and robust infrastructure.
On Wednesday, Agarwal mentioned that the conglomerate is considering investments in the range of ₹70,000 to ₹80,000 crore to establish power generation facilities and an aluminium smelter, anticipating that these projects could commence operations within three years, contingent on feasibility assessments and government assistance.
Asansol has emerged as a favorable site for these developments, given its coal availability and existing infrastructure. Vedanta currently holds approximately 300 acres of land in the region, although additional land may be required for the new projects.
According to PTI, Agarwal spoke to reporters in Kolkata following a meeting with Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, stating that a feasibility study will be conducted before finalizing any investment decisions. He emphasized that the success of the projects hinges on reliable access to coal and water, as well as prompt government clearances.
The chief minister told me that I could explore investment in any sector, and I said I would look at it. I promised him that thousands of jobs would be created,
Agarwal noted, reflecting on his discussions with Adhikari earlier that day. He highlighted the necessity for proactive state government support, including timely resource access and approvals. Agarwal urged the government to consider these potential investments as a priority and to facilitate their swift implementation.
He described the chief minister as enthusiastic and dynamic, expressing gratitude for the time they spent discussing the attraction of large-scale industrial investments to the state.
Vedanta is also looking into the logistics of sourcing alumina, a crucial raw material for aluminium production, from its operations in Odisha, particularly from Jharsuguda. The existing railway network is expected to assist in transporting the alumina to the new facility in West Bengal.
This investment plan could also pave the way for smaller businesses to engage in downstream industries linked to aluminium production. Agarwal mentioned that local entrepreneurs could invest in operations requiring between ₹5 crore and ₹50 crore.
West Bengal is a state of entrepreneurs. They can set up industries for ₹5 crore to ₹50 crore,
he stated, emphasizing the skilled workforce and entrepreneurial spirit present in the state to support industrial growth.
Besides the two main projects, Agarwal expressed his desire to leverage Bengal’s talent and business acumen to create substantial employment opportunities.
However, the potential investment remains in the exploratory phase, with the feasibility study set to assess the project’s location, necessary infrastructure, and overall viability.
