Jharsuguda: The Indian government has sanctioned Rs 2,100 crore for the growth and modernization of Veer Surendra Sai (VSS) Airport in Jharsuguda, with the objective of enhancing air connectivity in western Odisha.
During a meeting concerning the airport’s infrastructure enhancements, Bargarh MP and Airport Advisory Committee chairman Pradip Purohit disclosed this information.
Purohit stated that approximately 350 acres of land will be acquired for the expansion, which involves extending the runway, building a new terminal, and upgrading passenger facilities to bolster air connectivity in the region.
“We held discussions with the authorities concerned about the airport’s development proposals including the introduction of direct flights to Mumbai and Chennai, as well as an additional morning flight to New Delhi. We will present these proposals to the Civil Aviation Ministry for consideration, and also request the Culture department to showcase the rich art and cultural heritage of western Odisha at the airport,” he said.
Officials noted that the acquisition process for 168.88 acres intended for runway expansion is currently underway, with the airport aiming for a 41.2 percent increase in passenger traffic. The planned upgrades are expected to enhance its capability to accommodate the rising number of travelers and air traffic.
Expanding flight connectivity is also a major focus, with proposals including a second morning flight from Jharsuguda to New Delhi, as well as direct flights to Chennai, Jaipur, and Visakhapatnam in the initial phase.
These new services aim to offer western Odisha passengers more travel options and lessen their reliance on connecting flights through other cities.
Additionally, enhancing passenger amenities is a key priority, with plans to install an ATM and establish a restaurant and food stalls within the airport. A dedicated tourism information center has also been proposed to promote tourist attractions, heritage sites, and destinations throughout western Odisha.
The committee emphasized the necessity for a dedicated ambulance at the airport to improve emergency medical response capabilities.
Among those present at the meeting earlier this week were Jharsuguda MLA Tankadhar Tripathy and representatives from the Airports Authority of India (AAI).
