In a notable anti-corruption victory, the Odisha Vigilance has achieved a conviction against a former Senior Surgery Specialist from the Jharsuguda District Headquarters Hospital in a bribery scandal.
Dr. Debendranath Nayak, previously serving as the Senior Surgery Specialist, was found guilty by the Special Judge for Vigilance in Sambalpur. He received a sentence of four years of rigorous imprisonment along with a financial penalty.
Charges were brought against Nayak under Section 13(2) in conjunction with Section 13(1)(d) and Section 7 of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988 for soliciting and accepting a bribe from a complainant to perform a hydrocele operation on his cousin.
Following the conviction, Dr. Nayak was taken into custody to begin serving his sentence.
In light of this conviction, the Odisha Vigilance plans to approach the relevant authorities to request the cessation of Dr. Nayak’s pension.
