Bhubaneswar: A former senior surgery specialist at the District Headquarters Hospital (DHH) in Jharsuguda has been sentenced to four years of rigorous imprisonment by a Vigilance court on Monday after being found guilty of taking a bribe to perform a hydrocele operation.

Dr. Debendranath Nayak, who previously held the position of Senior Surgery Specialist at DHH, Jharsuguda, was convicted by the Special Judge, Vigilance, in Sambalpur, and was also subjected to a monetary fine.

The Odisha Vigilance had filed charges against Nayak under the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988, after he was found to have demanded and accepted a bribe from a complainant for performing hydrocele surgery on the complainant’s cousin.

After his conviction, Nayak was taken into custody to begin serving his sentence.

In light of the conviction, the Vigilance department is set to approach the appropriate authority to initiate the process of halting his pension.
