Odisha's Exports Could Surge to $50 Billion by 2030, Says Exim Bank Report

BHUBANESWAR: According to a new report from India Exim Bank, Odisha’s merchandise exports are anticipated to reach $24.4 billion by 2030 under a favorable scenario in line with India’s $2 trillion export goal. An even more ambitious projection suggests exports could soar to $50 billion if the state’s share of national exports increases from the current 2.4% to approximately 5%.

The report, titled ‘The Odisha Opportunity: A Trade and Investment Roadmap’ and released on Friday, shows that Odisha’s current merchandise export value is around $10.8 billion for the fiscal year 2025-26. Assuming the same compound annual growth rate (CAGR) continues, exports could rise to $14.9 billion over the next four years, marking a growth rate of 8.4%. Under optimistic projections, the state could see exports grow between 22.7% to 35.9% to reach $24.4 billion, or even $50 billion under the most ambitious scenario.

However, the report highlights that Odisha’s exports of $10.8 billion in FY 2025-26 fall significantly short of the target of Rs 3.5 trillion ($39.6 billion) set by the Odisha Export Policy, 2022. It also noted that 98.9% of the state’s exports come from the top 15 out of 30 districts, indicating a heavy concentration in select areas.

Furthermore, the report identified several areas, including Jharsuguda, Angul, Sambalpur, Jagatsinghpur, and Jajpur, as ‘missing middle export districts.’ It suggests that districts such as Sundargarh, Kalahandi, Khurda, Balasore, and Rayagada should be targeted in the short to medium term to enhance regional participation in exports.

To achieve its long-term export vision, the report emphasizes the need for a comprehensive and forward-thinking export strategy.
