In Jharsuguda, a 26-year-old man identified as Ankit Ghosh, also known as Sonu, was injured in a police shootout during a late-night operation in the Brajrajnagar area on Sunday. Ghosh, a known offender, suffered a bullet wound to his right thigh while police were pursuing him and his accomplice.
The confrontation was triggered by a complaint from a woman at the Orient police station, who reported that Ghosh and his associate, Vakil Rai, had entered her home with a firearm and threatened her, attempting to shoot her due to an ongoing feud. Fortunately, the weapon malfunctioned, allowing her to escape.
According to Jharsuguda Superintendent of Police Gundala Reddy Raghavendra, a specialized police unit was formed in response to the complaint, initiating a manhunt for the suspects. They were located near OPM Ghat, where police attempted to negotiate their surrender. However, the suspects allegedly fired at the officers in an attempt to avoid capture.
The SP reported that despite multiple warnings to surrender, Ghosh and Rai continued to shoot at police, prompting a defensive response. During the exchange of fire, Ghosh was wounded before being apprehended, while Rai managed to flee the scene.
