Bhubaneswar: In a recent update to the Rajya Sabha, Union Minister of State for Education Dr. Sukanta Majumdar disclosed that Odisha has a total of 76 Kendriya Vidyalayas (KVs) and five Central Higher Educational Institutions (CHEIs) operating under the Ministry of Education.
Responding to a query from Odisha Rajya Sabha MP Dilip Kumar Ray, the Minister provided this information based on data from the Unified District Information System for Education Plus (UDISE+) for the 2025-26 academic year and the All India Survey on Higher Education (AISHE) for 2023-24.
Khordha district ranks first in the state with the highest number of Kendriya Vidyalayas, hosting 10 schools, followed by Angul and Ganjam, each with seven. Sambalpur has five Kendriya Vidyalayas, while both Balangir and Cuttack have four.
The Ministry’s statistics indicate that several districts, such as Bargarh, Bhadrak, Boudh, Deogarh, Gajapati, Jharsuguda, Kandhamal, Kendrapara, Malkangiri, Nabarangpur, Nayagarh, Nuapada, and Sonepur, have one or two Kendriya Vidyalayas.
Odisha’s five Central Higher Educational Institutions encompass the Central University of Odisha located in Koraput, the National Institute of Technology (NIT) in Sundargarh, the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER) in Ganjam, the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) in Sambalpur, and the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) in Khordha.
According to data from UDISE+ for 2025-26, there are 2,245 teachers employed at the Kendriya Vidyalayas throughout Odisha.
Furthermore, the AISHE for 2023-24 reports that the five Central Higher Educational Institutions in the state employ 753 teachers and 686 non-teaching staff while housing 1,758 PhD scholars.
