Vedanta Aluminium is making strides in rural education within the Jharsuguda and Sundargarh districts of Odisha through its flagship initiative, Project Vidya. This program is designed to enhance access to educational opportunities and boost outcomes in government schools.
Since its launch, Project Vidya has benefited more than 25,000 students across 32 government schools and 51 Anganwadi centres in the operational zones of Kuraloi, Jamkhani, and Ghogharpalli. The project tackles the issue of teacher shortages in rural areas by hiring qualified educators from nearby communities, thereby improving classroom instruction and generating employment opportunities for local youth. So far, 21 additional teachers have been appointed under this initiative.
Project Vidya takes a holistic approach to enhancing the educational environment. The initiative provides schools with essential learning aids, reference books for students in Classes IX and X, sports equipment, classroom furniture, and health and hygiene awareness sessions. These efforts are reinforced by activities that promote engagement, foster confidence, and make learning more enjoyable for students.
Amares Kumar, CEO of Vedanta Aluminium Coal Mines, commented on the initiative, stating: _”Education creates opportunities that extend far beyond the classroom. Through Project Vidya, we are strengthening the learning ecosystem in our neighbouring communities by supporting schools with additional teachers and learning resources, while creating meaningful livelihood opportunities for local youth. Our endeavour is to help every child learn with confidence and realise their full potential.”_
Reflecting on her experience, Lalita Padhan, a teacher at Bartap Project Upper Primary School in Kuraloi, expressed: _”The opportunity to teach children from my own community has been deeply fulfilling. With stronger classroom support and better learning resources, I have seen students participate more actively and develop greater confidence in their studies. It is rewarding to contribute to their learning journey and future aspirations.”_
The initiative has yielded positive results across the participating schools. Student attendance has risen by 14%, and targeted academic support in Mathematics, Science, and English has reinforced foundational skills. Project Vidya also aids students in preparing for competitive exams and scholarship programs, including the Odisha Adarsha Vidyalaya (OAV) entrance examination, which grants admission to model residential schools known for quality education, and the Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya (JNV) selection test, a national-level entrance exam for residential schools that nurture talented rural students. In FY 26, 11 students successfully qualified for OAV, while 4 students from the Jamkhani and Ghogharpalli areas obtained scholarships through the Bruti Examination, which supports deserving students in their educational pursuits.
Through Project Vidya, Vedanta Aluminium Coal Mines is advancing rural education by addressing teacher shortages, enhancing classroom experiences, and creating opportunities for local youth. This initiative is part of the company’s wider community development efforts, which have positively influenced over 200,000 people across 26 villages through targeted education, healthcare, livelihood, and social development initiatives, contributing to inclusive growth and long-term community advancement.
