Bhubaneswar: Vedanta Aluminium, the leading aluminium producer in India, celebrated Sambalpuri Day as part of its community development project, Project VedKala. The event gathered more than 100 participants from Parmanpur and Dalki gram panchayats in Jharsuguda district, who engaged in lively cultural activities and competitions.
Sambalpuri Day honors the birth anniversary of the esteemed linguist and scholar Guru Satya Narayan Bohidar. This day is dedicated to celebrating the rich cultural heritage of Western Odisha, highlighted by its world-famous hand-woven textiles, lively folk music, dance forms, literary contributions, and indigenous arts. It serves as a reminder of the collective duty to protect and transmit these cultural treasures to future generations.
In this spirit, Vedanta Aluminium’s festivities provided a dynamic platform for local communities to express their cultural identity, respect traditional art forms, and foster pride in Sambalpuri heritage.
The celebrations featured a variety of events that highlighted the vibrant traditions of Western Odisha, including competitions in Sambalpuri dance and song, musical chairs, cultural performances, discussions on the importance of preserving Sambalpuri heritage, and a special ceremony to honor exemplary participants and community champions.
Project VedKala is Vedanta Aluminium’s initiative aimed at safeguarding Odisha’s traditional art forms while creating sustainable livelihood opportunities for rural artisans. Currently, the program supports over 100 local artisans in Jharsuguda, providing structured training in bamboo crafts, Saura art, and Sabai grass handicrafts, along with facilitating market access to boost their income. This initiative not only focuses on skill enhancement but also aims to revive indigenous crafts and promote cultural entrepreneurship.
During the event, C Chandru, CEO of Vedanta Aluminium – Jharsuguda, remarked, “Sambalpuri Day vividly showcases Odisha’s vast cultural wealth, and we are dedicated to initiatives that empower communities and protect Odisha’s unique heritage for future generations. Through Project VedKala, we are creating opportunities for local communities to celebrate, sustain, and share their rich artistic traditions while fostering livelihood opportunities rooted in cultural preservation.”
Dileshwari Buda, a participant from Siriapali, shared, “This celebration allowed us to proudly present our traditions, and Project VedKala has motivated many of us to preserve our art and pass it on to the younger generation. Programs like this by Vedanta Aluminium inspire us to keep our cherished heritage alive.”
